Keeping your RV’s water system clean is essential for safe drinking, bathing, and washing on the road. Whether your rig has been in storage or you’re prepping for a long trip, knowing how to sanitize your RV water system safely ensures you and your family stay healthy.
Why Sanitizing Your RV Water System Matters
RV freshwater tanks can develop bacteria, mold, and foul odors over time. This can happen if:
- Your RV has been in storage
- You’ve used questionable water sources
- You’ve gone weeks between tank cleanings
- You’ve noticed a funky smell or taste in the water
Even with filters, the inside of your tank and lines can build up residue. That’s why full system sanitation is important—especially before spring or after long periods of non-use.
Contact Daisy RV if you’d prefer a professional sanitizing service or need help diagnosing odors or clogs in your system.
What You’ll Need
- Unscented liquid household bleach (NOT splashless)
- A measuring cup
- Clean hose
- Funnel
- Potable water safe hose for rinsing
- Freshwater tank full or partially filled
Step-by-Step: How to Sanitize Your RV Water System Safely
1. Turn Off Water Heater
- Make sure the electric or gas water heater is OFF
- Never introduce bleach into the hot water tank directly
2. Drain the System
- Open low-point drains and faucets
- Drain the fresh tank and the water heater (if you’re doing a full flush)
- Close drains once emptied
3. Mix Bleach Solution
- Use 1/4 cup of bleach for every 15 gallons of fresh water tank capacity
- Example: For a 60-gallon tank, use 1 cup of bleach
- Dilute bleach in a gallon of water before pouring it in
- Never pour bleach directly into the tank undiluted
4. Add the Solution to the Freshwater Tank
- Use a funnel or water pump to add the bleach solution
- Fill the tank completely with fresh water after adding bleach
5. Run the Solution Through the System
- Turn on the water pump
- Open each faucet (hot and cold) until you smell bleach
- Flush toilet and run outdoor shower if available
6. Let It Sit for 8–12 Hours
- Allow the bleach to sanitize the system
- Do not use the water during this time
7. Drain and Flush the System
- Drain the entire system again
- Refill with clean water
- Open all faucets and flush until you no longer smell bleach
- May require 2–3 full tank refills to clear
